Giovanni Monoscalco

Ensembles

The artists I work with and the ensembles I play in.

Solo work

As a soloist I try to step away from the usual clichés of classical guitar, offering a repertoire of original compositions and giving early music a new, present-day sound through modern techniques, often borrowed from acoustic or electric guitar (wrongly considered less noble instruments), and through open tunings, a practice rarely used or practically non-existent in the academic world.

My aim is to widen the sound horizon of the guitar. In my concerts, besides a guitar in standard tuning, I use instruments already set in prepared tunings, to avoid that awkward silence while retuning between pieces.

Duo with Luisa Lauri

Luisa Lauri holds a guitar diploma. We were classmates at the conservatory for a few months. In 1995 I had composed the Suite in D minor for alto recorder, baroque violin and lute; to my surprise, when I went looking for a recorder player who could perform it, I was given her name, and our collaboration has been active ever since.

Her contribution was decisive in writing and arranging the pieces.

What makes our duo special is its range from early to contemporary music: recorders and lutes for the early repertoire, a guitar duo for modern and contemporary music.

Jomade Trio

  • Adele Maliziola: flute
  • Mauro Cipriani: cello
  • Giovanni Monoscalco: guitar and arrangements

The trio was formed in 2014. Here too the repertoire comes from my own arranging work on classical and modern pieces, plus original compositions written specifically for the trio.
